"Dutchman" is a fun team-building simulation that focuses on themes of leadership, planning and communications. Used world-wide, this is the most effective and engaging inter-team collaboration exercise around.
Dutchman is a powerful and proven team building event that plays with organizations of all kinds. Feedback from sessions is extremely good due to the energy the play creates, a solid instructional design, and its outstanding debriefing qualities. Players leave with tangible ideas for better communications, improved teamwork and ideas for leadership.
The setting is modern-day Southwestern United States in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. Outfitted in Cowboy hats and colorful bandanas, teams go on a search for gold from the famous Lost Dutchman's Mine, first discovered by Jacob Waltz in the 1860s and lost since he died in 1892.
The exercise focuses on inter-table collaboration as its main outcome. It also links to issues of quality, leadership, systems, communications and a variety of other organizational issues. Team size is 5 or 6 people and there is no limit to the number of participants.
This exercise is truly outstanding for a highly interactive morning or afternoon event. In 3 to 4 hours, participants get to play and then fully debrief the event and discuss real opportunities for improvement. It functions very well as a full-day program within a conference or as a specific training event on team building, leadership and collaboration. Many organizations use it in multi-day training and leadership development programs.
Choose from among 2 versions: 3-team or 4-team. There is no limit to the number of times you can use this exercise.
The exercise is CD-based and contains everything necessary to run the exercise: facilitator's guide and instructions, presentation materials in PowerPoint, debriefing outline and questions, etc. You also receive a complete set of ready-to-use Team Materials that include laminated forms for team packs, resource cards, grub stake envelopes, poster maps, and toy trinkets for tabletop fun.

Great product for Team Development and promoting concepts of Team Collaboration. Is complex enough to engage participants and challenge them but easy to facilitate and reinforce messages.
This program is simply awesome. Very simple, very engaging, and more importantly the learning is derived in an absolutely non-threatening environment. The message is always crystal clear, 'do not be afraid to change' and 'its OK to fail' etc. etc. etc.
I first met Scott Simmerman through his well known "Square Wheel" series, which I've been using since the nineties. Lost Dutchman adds great value to my portfolio offerings, since it's a high impact, extremely engaging moment to the teams I coach. Highly recommended.

Greatest value of the game is it's flexibility and the ease in which it engages participants. Suitable for virtually any training objective since the feedback options are limitless and through the group dynamics any issue can be tackled from role conflict to leadership vacuum to poor communication patterns. Flexible also in terms of adjusting to crowd size and time constraints. All in all a great (and fun!) tool for any trainer or company!
I have been using the Lost Dutchman for 15 years and it never fails as a business simulation to stimulate the participants and create excellent learning. Its close link to business reality makes it a winner as well as the energy it creates. I have run in at 8pm at night after a full day and the energy is just as good as at 8am. Key uses are for implementation of strategy, communication among teams, understaning indicators and ROI.
