Share your reaction to whatever prompt lies under your thumb. Thumball is a soft 6" stuffed ball with loads of applications!
[NOTE: Silver Series Conversation Prompts are available as Thumballs, UNZiP-IT! Pocket & Deck, and Virtual/Remote PPT.]
HOW IT WORKS
Someone throws the ball, another catches it and responds to the prompt under their thumb.
FACILITATION TIP 1
EXPLAIN....
In order to achieve greatness, sometimes teams need to take a step back and reflect on their relationships, communication, and their process of working together.
Tailor your Thumball game to meet your needs:
Option1: Have each player respond only to the prompt under their thumb, then toss the ball to another.
Option 2: After the first player has responded to their prompt, invite others to share their perspective or discuss ways they could work together more effectively.
FACILITATION TIP 2
SET GROUND RULES
Explain that conversations about team dynamics can become emotionally charged. The goal of the Team Dynamics Thumball activity is to raise important issues and have necessary conversations in a positive environment. So that everyone can feel safe, have the group set up their own Ground Rules. Here are some that you might want on the list:
- Only one person speaks at a time
- Speak only for yourself; Use I statements
- No personal attacks critique ideas, not people
- Agree to disagree; disagree without being disagreeable
- Listen - make sure everyone feels heard and validated
- Be positive and non-judgmental; open to new ideas
FACILITATION TIP 3
IF CONVERSATIONS GET STICKY
Expert facilitators suggest these techniques to ease difficult or emotional situations:
- Pause the conversation so you can review the ground rules with the group.
- Redirect negative comments; ask what can we do differently?
- Focus on changes that can positively affect the team.
- If two parties disagree, suggest that they switch roles and make the counter argument.
- Keep a flip chart of difficult topics that can be addressed later.
- Be ready to share some of your own experiences.
- Take a break. Stop for awhile and regroup.
- Thank participants for sharing their personal stories.

Use our Quick Response Student Whiteboards to see who's learning what… and who's not getting it! Encourage participation with this fun and effective individual dry-erase boards class set. They’re a huge hit with students and educators, as every individual gets to contribute to the conversation. These super-sturdy, dry-erase, TWO-sided whiteboards are great for conducting icebreaker activities, casting votes, answering questions, rating or ranking items, sharing game answers, and more. You’ll be surprised by how often you pull out your answer boards!
FEATURES
- Set includes 12 Quick Response Whiteboards (a.k.a. Answer Boards) with blue handles and 12 mini-erasers
- Ultra durable and sturdy construction.
- Two-sided student whiteboards with dry-erase surfaces.
- Handles have holes for simple and convenient storage.
- Whiteboard Writing Surface Dimensions: 6" x 7.75".
TIPS
By calling on the first person to answer, everyone else in the room stops thinking on their own. The beauty of answer boards is that they allow every person to think and write an answer. Consider these tips to maximize use of your individual dry erase boards class set:
- Give people ample time to think of answers, and write them down.
- Consider “stand-pair-share” to get people moving and engaged in a meeting or learning event.
- Use student whiteboards for ice-breakers and energizers. Ask each person to jot down a goal, concern, or favorite quote. Or, for instance, ask people to write where they're from, then find the person who lives closest/farthest from them.
- Involve in-person and remote learners with student answer boards
- Entertain kids on long car rides with the travel-friendly individual dry-erase white boards

Emotional Intelligence is a skill that allows people to be more effective in their roles at work and at home. It’s not just touchy-feely stuff and being able to name your feelings. Rather, it enhances employee retention and engagement, customer service, collaboration, and crisis management.
5 SKILLS OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Emotional Intelligence (a.k.a. EQ) is associated with five skills. Develop your teams’ EQ by facilitating conversations that help participants grow more aware of their motivations, measure their reactions to difficult situations, and hone techniques to manage those emotions in empathy and social acumen. The five skills are:
- Self-Awareness [SA]
- Motivation [MO]
- Self-Regulation [SR]
- Empathy [EM]
- Social Skills [SS]
EQ THUMBALL PROMPTS
Each conversation prompt on the Emotional Intelligence Thumball indicates the skill with which it is associated. Use the two-letter EQ skill codes (MO, SA, SR, EM, and SS), to build awareness of the skills, while building the skills themselves!
For example:
- "What contributes to distrust?" is followed by [EM] for Empathy
- "How could someone regain composure after snapping?" lists [SR] for Self-Regulation
- "What holds you back from being your best YOU?" has [SA] for Self-Awareness
30 prompts are listed on the Thumball, specifically:
- Self-Awareness [SA] - 7 prompts
- Motivation [MO] - 5 prompts
- Self-Regulation [SR] - 5 prompts
- Empathy [EM] - 6 prompts
- Social Skills [SS] - 7 prompts

MULTIPLE WAYS TO FACILITATE THE GAME
Adjust your play to make more or less of those skill areas:
- Have recipients of the ball read the question aloud before answering.
- Ask other players to guess which skill is referenced by conversation prompt.
- Discuss why that prompt is categorized that way and what other skills might be addressed
- Answer the question for yourself
- Have other players answer the same question
- Discuss differences among the answers
- If a player isn't sure how to answer, invite them "take a pass," consult a colleague, or choose another prompt
- Don't rush! Remember that thoughtful answers sometimes take a moment to think about. Offer to come back to the person for their answer after they've had time to consider it.

FAQS
Q: How is this different from GameShow Pro?
A: Whaddaya Know? Jeopardy-style classroom game is a simpler, more affordable option that uses dry-erase boards rather than software. It’s tactile, team-based, and perfect for tabletop learning—while GameShow Pro is a full-scale digital system for larger productions.
Q: Can learners create their own games?
A: Yes! Having teams design categories and questions is one of the most powerful ways to build understanding and retention.
Q: How many people can use one board?
A: Each board works well for 4–12 participants (2–4 teams). For larger groups, set up multiple boards and run parallel tournaments.
Q: Do I need software or electronics?
A: No. If you want to add some high-tech pizazz for fast-paced play, pair Whaddaya Know? with wireless buzzers like Who's First? or Me First!
Q: How long does a game take?
A: A short round can take 10–15 minutes. A full board with debrief typically runs 25–40 minutes.
CONCLUSION
Turn your students into teachers! They can make their own popular TV-style game by creating their own questions, answers, and categories with Tabletop Whaddaya Know? Game.
Popular TV-style-like games continue to win big in the classroom. And, what better way for students to show what they've learned than to teach others what they know by making up their own categories and questions?
Have groups of students create their own popular TV-style-like game, which they can then conduct for the rest of the group.

** TIPS **
FACILITATION SUGGESTIONS:
Your goal is to make conversations about ethics interesting and productive, without judgement or finger pointing. To explore these touchy questions most effectively, remind your group that there are no right answers. Be transparent about these goals and explain your interest in opening discussion and having rich conversations -- about morals, handling sticky situations, evaluating fairness, and exploring the organizational practices that enable or inhibit ethical behavior.
Take turns circulating the ball by passing, rolling, tossing and catching. Ask recipients to respond to the prompt under their right thumb. Because each prompt can lead to an interest dialogue, you may choose any one of these facilitation techniques:
- Have each recipient answer the question with the first thought that comes to their mind.
- After one recipient responds, invite others to share their replies to the same prompt.
- Toss the ball to select one on discussion prompt to focus on for your entire meeting.
- Ask players to anticipate what answer will be given by another player.
More for Workplace Ethics:
These same thoughtful prompts are available in the UNZIP-it! with Workplace Ethics Card Deck and come in a playful zippered pocket (Product Code #: BLZPAQ).

A team challenge for innovation and prototyping!
The Marshmallow Challenge is a remarkably fun and instructive design exercise that encourages teams to experience simple but profound lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity.
If you need to kickstart a meeting, get a team into a creative frame of mind, or simply want to encourage your organization to think about what it takes to dramatically increase innovation, invest 45 minutes to run a marshmallow challenge.
This broadly circulated team building experience was recently popularized by Tom Wujec, who presented a TED Talk on the subject. The Marshmallow Challenge is to build the tallest possible free-standing structure, which will support one marshmallow on the top, using only 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape and one yard of string -- in exactly 18 minutes!
ALL IN ONE CONVENIENT KIT
We've assembled all the parts into one convenient kit!
- bag of marshmallows
- box of spaghetti
- roll of masking tape
- roll of cotton twine
- tape measure
- 5 scissors
- 5 paper lunch bags
- Facilitation Notes for how to run the exercise
- 1 see-through vinyl tote to carry it all!
Surprising lessons emerge when you compare teams' performance. Who tends to do the worst? Why? Who tends to do the best? Why? What improves performance? What kills it?
The Marshmallow Challenge team building game is among the fastest and most powerful techniques for improving a team's capacity to generate fresh ideas, build rapport and incorporate prototyping -- all of which lie at the heart of effective innovation.

FACILITATION TIPS
- Explain your goal. To maximize participation, explain that your goal is to promote shared understanding and build a happier, more supportive environment.
- Don’t rush. Appreciate that some may not be able to give quick or pat answers to a prompt; others might want to take some time to discuss their thoughts. Feel free to linger before moving to the next question, giving people ample time to discuss what’s on their mind.
- Take notes. Thumballs have a great way to tease out important information. Keep a notepad handy in case you hit a topic you’d like to revisit later.
- Give each player a “pass.” If a player finds a prompt particularly difficult, invite them to take a PASS, ASK A FRIEND, or TOSS AGAIN.

Signal that "play" is an essential part of "learn." A Bundle of "Koosh" in your training indicates that play is welcome AND essential to productive learning. Trainers love to use Koosh for icebreakers and reinforcement games. Koosh have about as many uses as they have rubbery strands!
GREAT WAYS TO USE THESE WONDERFUL RUBBERY BALLS!

Dive into conversations about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with the DEI Thumball by Trainers Warehouse. The DEI Thumball, a favorite diversity and inclusion game, tackles a difficult topic with smarts and sensitivity.
After all, building community and culture by understanding our individual identities and differences isn’t just nice-to-do. It’s our shared responsibility. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are critical to creating high-performing, supportive, and engaging workplaces. Unfortunately, many leaders are unsure about how to have conversations about these sensitive topics and then how to transform the discussions and intent into action. Like other diversity training SMEs, make this diversity training game a core component of your next DEI training event!
The D-E-I Thumball helps team leaders, teachers, and managers have safe and constructive conversations about identity, experiences with racism, community challenges, privilege and power, as well as ways to promote tolerance and feelings of belonging.
In addition to the 31 conversation prompts contained on the Thumball, you’ll find FACILITATION TIPS and a GLOSSARY of common DEI terms in the packaging.
Many people worry about saying the wrong thing during DEI conversations. As a result, these important conversations often don’t happen. The DEI Thumball is loaded with poignant conversation prompts about identity, experiences, community, us-versus-them thinking, privilege and power, and DEI in today’s world. Each prompt, vetted by diversity experts, is phrased to promote positive conversation and shared understanding.
Thumball™ is a soft 6" stuffed vinyl ball that looks like a cool soccer ball. Its panels are pre-printed with questions suited for adults and teens. Safely toss it around in a group and ask participants to share their reaction to whatever prompt lies under their thumb. Looking for more DEI resources? FACILITATION TIPS
TIP 1: Create a safe environment – Beyond sharing your goals and wishes for open dialogue, discuss ways in which the group can create “psychological safety.”
- Recognize that everyone joins the conversation with unique experiences and knowledge. Embrace players’ needs to pass on a question or ask for explanations.
- Acknowledge the difficulty in sharing personal information and offer support. Use “OUCH” signs, to indicate personal hurt or express empathy.
- Listen and ask questions to understand and empathize, not to defend, debate, or rationalize.
TIP 2: Set ground rules together – Players are more likely to abide by ground rules if they help define them. The group’s list will likely look something like this:
- One person speaks at a time
- Speak for yourself; Use “I” statements
- Seek understanding by asking for clarification
- Critique ideas, not people
- Agree to disagree. Disagree without being disagreeable
- Listen and validate other players
- Be open to new ideas, not judgmental
TIP 3: Be prepared if conversations get sticky – Equip yourself with a few techniques to ease emotional situations
- Revert to the ground rules, as needed
- Express how situations make you feel
- If parties disagree, suggest they switch roles and make the counter argument
- Keep a “parking lot” of difficult topics to be addressed later
- Share your own personal stories
- Take a break and regroup later
- Thank participants for sharing
TIP 4: Establish a shared vocabulary – Define common terms in the DEI world’s evolving lexicon.
Ally / Allyship: Someone who supports a group other than one’s own
Anti-Racist: a person who opposes racism and promotes racial equality.
BIPOC: An acronym used to refer to Black, Indigenous and People of Color.
Conversation across difference: open discussions about peoples’ different beliefs and backgrounds.
Micro-Aggression: Verbal or nonverbal slights which communicate derogatory or negative messages to target persons. i.e. “You are a credit to your race.” “I jewed him down.” “Why are you so loud/quiet?”
Psychological safety: refers to an environment in which team players can take risks without fear of retribution or negative consequences.
Unconscious Bias: stereotypes about certain groups of people that form outside individuals’ conscious awareness. Common biases are based on gender, race, weight, ageism, beauty, name, height, etc.; i.e. consider this riddle: a father and son are in a horrible car crash that kills the dad. The son is rushed to the hospital; just as he’s about to go under the knife, the surgeon says, “I can’t operate—that boy is my son!” How can this be? The surgeon is the boy’s mother

DaBridge brings Leonardo DaVinci's simple but ingenious bridge idea to life. It is made with beautiful and sturdy notched wooden stick and dowel pieces. The ingenuity of the bridge is that it doesn’t need nails or fasteners to hold it together. If built to Leonardo’s design, it gets stronger the more weight is added.
LEONARDO DAVINCI BRIDGE - INCLUDES
The DaVinci Bridge Kit includes legs and dowels to create a 6.5-foot long structure -- plenty long enough for several adults to collaborate in the building process!
- 16 square wooden legs - 24" long x 1" square
- 8 wooden dowels - 24" long x 3/4" diameter
- Convenient carry bag
ADAPTABLE FACILITATION NOTES
Robust facilitation notes provide plenty of options to make the classic DaVinci's Bridge a successful team building experience for all sorts of teams. In the basic game, a "designer" is equipped with a picture of the finished product, but isn't allowed to show the picture to the builders. Designers can only communicate building tips verbally. With limited team meetings, how well will your groups work together to get it built? Adapt the team building game to the needs of your group by adding in new challenges -- an earthquake hits; time pressure is added; intergroup colloboration is required.
- Complete notes for Architects/Builders Game
- 4 additional game variations
- Debriefing and review questions

- Work Styles - proudest accomplishments, creative contributions, strengths
SESSION DEBRIEF THUMBALL
For experiences to stick -- for them to move to long-term memory -- individuals must take time to think about what happened. They have to talk about it, relate it to something they already know, understand its importance, and consider when they might need to retrieve that learning down the road. After all, we only remember what we take time to think about (otherwise it's quickly in and out of our brains). That's the importance of a DEBRIEF!
You'll find the Session Debriefs Thumball useful for games focusing on:
- Team building
- Communication
- Leadership
- Process improvement
- Negotiations
SESSION CLOSER THUMBALL
End a learning session by taking a beat -- a pause to let the learning settle in and allow learners' brains to organize the new information so it can be easily recalled. Take time at the end of class to draw our key learning points and ah-ha moments.
The Session Closers Thumball offers a variety of memory-enhancing techniques. Understand that our brains aren't equipped to remember every single thought that enters. Instead, we remember what we take time to think about. Each of the prompts on this one-of-a-kind Thumball seeks to enhance retention by highlighting memorable points for participants, making them consider goals or challenges of implementation, heightening the emotional impact of the session, and more.
For instance, prompts help learners focus on ...
- Information and observations learned

The point of any learning game is the debrief—the conversation at the end of the experience when facilitators tease out observations and learning points.
LEARNING GAMES ARE WORTH THE BOTHER!
Make the most of any learning game! Learners don't want to be in training sessions that they feel are a waste of time. Similarly, facilitators want to use their time well. Skilled trainers, teachers, and facilitators know that learning becomes more "sticky" if they can create experiences that draw out emotions, incorporate physical movement, include surprise, and help learners stay focused. It's why games are the perfect conduit for growth and learning, and the reason trainers take time to find the perfect experiences.
One more benefit of games is that they remove you from the real world. If facing a challenge that differs from their real job, players often feel safer trying new things, take risks, and assume different roles. They get to see how normal tendencies, ways of thinking, and manners of behaving play out and intersect with others.
DEBRIEF LEARNING GAMES, EXERCISES, AND ACTIVITIES
But that's just the start.
- ... and more
SESSION DEBRIEF PROMPTS BASED ON BRAIN SCIENCE
I realize that may have sounded like a lot of memory and brain gobbledy gook above, but it's all applied in the Session Debrief Thumball.
This unique Silver Series Thumball offers a variety of conversation prompts that will help players consider the behaviors, strategies, and communication techniques that helped and hindered their success. Among the 32 prompts, you’ll find discussion starters that help players think about and process their experience and focus on the learning points worthy of long-term memory. For instance:
- Home in on feelings experienced during the game
- Consider roles assumed by various players and how those emerged
- Observe the strategies that help divide the group or build consensus
- Think about the means by which leaders emerged
- Understand communication strategies that helped or hindered the group's efforts
- Apply lessons to real world challenges
