I've used this and different versions of Thumballs in the past. I think it is one of the quickest, easiest, and most fun ways to get students to feel more comforatable sharing with the group. The fact that the topics are "random", and the participants have a choice, eliminates the "why did you give me that question" resistance to many other icebreakers.

Thumbs up for THUMBALL!

We used this product in a virtual environment. We ordered a ball for each of our 4 locations; New York, Boston, Minneapolis and Richmond. During a video conference, We literally tossed the ball from Minneapolis to one of the other sites (using a site located person to complete the toss to someone at their office) In only 10 minutes we were able to pass the ball around to 26 participants with each person having enough time to answer and toss to the next teammate.
