All Adrift is a short energetic activity to get teams working together, exchanging views and agreeing priorities. The activity is supplied digitally, for use in virtual or face-to-face training sessions.

THE ACTIVITY

Ideal for use as a virtual training activity or virtual training energiser (and also suitable for face-to-face classrooms too), each team member receives a Brief, telling them the scenario: they are crew members on a yacht, on a sailing holiday off the west coast of France.

An emergency arises when a fire starts in the galley and quickly spreads. They quickly inflate and launch a dinghy but much of the yacht is consumed by fire and they are able to grab only 14 items before abandoning ship.

Teams have a list of the 14 items and are asked to select the top ten most useful items for the situation. Once chosen, they must rank the items 1 to 10, with No.1 being the most important.

First, participants must do this on their own to provide an individual ranking. Then, participants are asked to work in their teams to prepare a 'team' ranking. Both individual and team rankings are recorded on a Ranking Form. There is also a Score Chart, so all the rankings can be scored and compared.

How effectively did participants work together as a team? What did they score - individuals and teams? How well did teams perform compared with individuals?

The chart is based on an 'Expert Ranking' provided by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI). Teams may choose to challenge this ranking but it will need to be a well-founded challenge!

Clear thinking, convincing argument and team rapport are all vital!

An ideal starter or team energizer on any course.

TRAINER'S ROLE

• Briefly introduce the training activity in plenary. Explain the activity has two parts, the first is for individuals to do on their own. The second is for team members to work together on the task.
• Allocate teams (3-4 per team) and put into breakout rooms.
• Send a copy of the Team Brief and a copy of the Ranking Form to each participant. If necessary, participants can draw up their own Ranking Form on paper.
• Tell them they each have 15-20 minutes to complete the task, on their own.
• After the allotted time ask them to now work as teams and repeat the ranking process. Announce teams have 30 minutes.
• Visit the breakout rooms to observe teams at work.
• Stop the activity at the allotted time. Issue the How to Score chart, so that all rankings can be scored.
• Debrief in a plenary session. Ask for volunteers to share their individual scores, then ask the same of teams. Alternatively, ask for a show of hands for each rating band. Explain the scores are based on an RNLI ranking.
• How did teams perform? How did they work as a team? Did a leader or coordinator emerge? How easily did they reach consensus?
• Were the consensus decisions of the team better or worse than the individual scores? What do the outcomes indicate?
• A flipchart/shared whiteboard might be useful - to list key points.

Each of the quotes on the black cards can be "built" from the words on the accompanying blue, green, and purple cards. The cards are color-coded, indicating the difficulty of figuring out the order of the words in the quote. As such, the deck includes

FACILITATING THE GAME

Setup: Select a difficulty. Shuffle the cards of the same color together, then distribute them evenly among the players. Do not pass out the black answer key card.

Play: Select one of the six quotes in a set and work together with your team to arrange the cards until you discover the answer. Solutions will always match fonts and colors. If you solve a quote, select a new quote and play again. Or use the cards to build a brand new inspirational quote from scratch.

VARIATIONS

1. No visuals - Teams are likely to lay out their cards to come up with the answer. For added difficulty, ask that players keep their card(s) hidden from teammates. Explain that they are only able to speak the words on their cards, but may not show them or put them down. For further difficulty, after a group has been through the exercise a few times, tell them they can ONLY speak the word on their card, and all other communications must be non-verbal.
2. Create-a-quote - Ask teams to build their own quote with an assortment of words from the cards they're dealt.
3. Reflection - Distribute the quote "answer key" cards as an ice-breaker or reflection game.

There's more to effective negotiating than the outcome alone. In fact, building productive relationships is equally important. Skillful negotiators know this is the key to their success - and its what sets them apart from the rest.

Based on Ury and Fishers collaborative win-win model, and heavily influenced by the highly-respected Thomas-Kilmann conflict resolution model, the offers a simple framework for determining ones negotiating style and the likely effect it has in negotiating situations.

THE ACTIVITY

It’s the start of a new week and the general manager at Cavendish is faced with a lot of ‘things to do’. It’s the perfect time to take a few moments to organise the week ahead:

• Plan the diary
• Prioritize the workload
• Decide where/how to best utilise staff
• Arrange meetings where necessary
• Learn to sometimes just say ‘NO’

Teams - or individuals - have two forms: Your Diary and Your Action Record, on which they record their responses.

In addition, the emails reveal some organisational problems and at the end of the activity participants are asked what underlying issues they were able to identify.

A scoring system allows teams' time planning skills to be assessed and scored. Teams then have a benchmark for improving their time management skills and productivity in the workplace.

The activity is straightforward to facilitate - full details are in the Trainer’s Notes.

TRAINER'S ROLE

1. Issue emails to teams (or individuals).

2. Tell teams they have 60 minutes to complete their task.

3. Issue forms: Your Diary and Your Action Record.

4. Observe teams (but do not get involved).

5. After 10 minutes issue the first of six additional emails - and one more every 10 minutes so that the final email is issued just a moment before the 60 minutes is up.

6. At 60 minutes stop the session and move on to the debrief.

7. Debrief the activity by leading a discussion to the whole group. Work through the forms, reveal the ‘right answers’ and allow teams to score their forms. They can then compare their decisions - usually provoking a lively discussion and plenty of disagreement. (Remember, the principles of time planning are the issue - rather than exactly the right response to a particular email).

8. Summarize the key learning points and announce the winning score. (Performance rating indicator supplied in the Trainer’s Notes.)

6 TEAM DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES

Engaging activities and thought-provoking review questionnaires make it easy for facilitators to develop learning opportunities. Each activity is designed with specific discussion topics in mind:

1. Over the Bridge – learn and practice basic team development skills

In this energizing activity, the task of making a bridge and a car should be easy, but the instructions are intentionally ambiguous. How effectively will teams question the key stakeholders, clarify their objectives, and develop plans before starting work? In the first part of Over the Bridge, team learn basic team working concepts. Part two provides an opportunity to apply that learning.

2. Rectangle – explore different of styles of communication

Playing Rectangle – creating the largest rectangle they can with the given game pieces – is an interesting challenge. Success requires effective communication and highlights differing personality styles (i.e., conscientious vs. dominating). The task seems to be straightforward but necessitates planning, listening, and recognizing one another's needs.

3. The Frame – focus on inter-team communication and big-picture thinking

In The Frame, facilitators are guided to break a team into two rooms or spaces that are out of sight of one another. The "instructors" in one room must coach the "constructors" in another room to build a complex structure. The team's shared task would be easy if they were in full site of each other and could work together to solve the problem. Frustration mounts until groups, step back, think, reconsider their assumptions, and overcome the obstacle that separates them.

4. Digital Display – discuss the interplay of individual and team success

Digital Display is a powerful activity experienced in complete silence. Everyone has an individual task—to form a unique number or letter with a handful of game pieces. Will each member of their team be successful? Or, will players be tempted to complete their personal task without regard for the rest of the group. Tending to personal needs first is tempting but may have unintended and unwelcome consequences that inhibit team success, require work to be redone, and harm relationships.

5. The Trailer – practice delegation, leadership, and team empowerment

See what happens when your team leaders have an overview of a task, but don't provide their teams with everything they need to complete the task. In The Trailer game, teams are divided into "designers" and "builders," and moved to separate locations. Each subgroup is working on a different part of the same project. Teams wrestle with delegation, incomplete information, and uncertainty until they are joined together later in the exercise.

6. The Tower – develop negotiation, conflict resolution, and inter-team cooperation skills

The Tower is a unique "coopetition" activity in which teams are challenged to build a tower as tall as they can. Teams tend to seek individual success over win-win solutions, but their ultimate success requires them to share ideas, work together, develop trust, and accept suboptimal height on their own tower construction. If a team works against another or tries to beat another, everyone loses out. The Tower demands effective analysis, clear and effective communication, leadership between teams, planning, building, and retaining trust and negotiating.

10 QUICK EXERCISES TO INTRODUCE, ENGAGE, & SET THE STAGE FOR LEARNING

Each of these last 10 activities can be played in just 10 to 15 minutes, plus debrief. Intersperse one or more into your training day to build peer relationships and keep groups energized:

1. Where's the Chair – identify what helps and hinders teamwork
2. The Stack – consider the impact of competition on teamwork and practice group decision making
3. Getting to Know You – establish relationships and differentiate between assumptions, expectations, and facts
4. Through the Bolt Hole – practice team problem solving, planning, consensus building and decision making
5. Domino Theory – understand the value of developing and testing multiple ideas, changing your mind, and learning from others.
6. Hold Everything – challenge assumptions, consider how success is measured, and differentiate between working to requirements vs personal preferences.
7. Rectangles – differentiate between customer requirements and personal standards when focusing on quality, goals, and expectations.
8. Roulette Wheel – explore the challenges of giving and receiving instructions, whether leading or following.
9. Playhouse – consider assumptions about competition and collaboration as teams race to be the first to enclose all team members in a 3-dimensional playhouse structure.
10. Creating Obstacles - each team designs an obstacle course to be completed by another team. Themes of communication and leadership emerge as they create hurdles, hoops, and more.

Mars Rover Challenge (formerly Mars Surface Rover) provides a powerful, unique hands-on experience that allows participants to connect with the concept of collaboration at a deep and personal level. Participants are immersed in a team construction activity, whereby they are tasked by the World Space Agency to build a prototype rover for traversing Mars' rocky terrain.

BOTH VERSIONS are included in this deluxe kit, Mars Rover Game series by HRDQ. The differences lie only in the lens through which collaboration is viewed—either from the perspective of leadership or teamwork. TEAM VERSION

The Teamwork version is designed to help individuals become more effective team members by allowing them to experience the differences between working collaboratively and working in "silos."

The program is ideal for established teams who are looking to increase their productivity, efficiency, and innovation and who may need to break free from unhealthy work habits. It is equally well suited for new teams who are striving to integrate collaboration into their developing team dynamic. This version introduces basic concepts such as interdependence, common goals, and diversity with an unconventional simulation.

How it Works: In the Teamwork version, the game is split into two rounds. In both rounds participants work in teams to construct a rover, but with varying approaches to work. In the first round, they simulate working in "silos" as they withhold information and complete their assigned tasks individually. In the second round, participants simulate working collaboratively as they communicate information and tasks openly and work together to design the rover they think has the best chance of completing its mission. The end result in each round usually is markedly different, and the process and outcomes make for lively discussion and usually quite a few "Ah-Ahs!" as they realize the effects the two different approaches to work have on morale, motivation, and performance.

LEADERSHIP VERSION

The Leadership version is designed to help individuals become more effective leaders by allowing them to experience the differences between three contrasting styles of leadership—traditional (command-and-control), passive, and collaborative.

The program is ideal for new and seasoned leaders as it provides them with a hands-on way to explore the three styles in depth and assess their advantages/disadvantages. This version introduces basic concepts such as communication, influence, and change management.

How it Works: In the Leadership version, participants work in teams to construct a rover, led by team member who (unknown to the rest of the team) adopts the traits of one of three contrasting leadership styles—traditional, passive, or collaborative. Each of the three styles engenders very different feelings and emotions among team members. And together, they provide a very real demonstration of the effects different styles can have on morale, motivation, and performance.

Learning Outcomes: Experience the concept and benefits of facilitative leadership, learn how a facilitative leadership style generates a team atmosphere, discover the drawbacks of traditional (autocratic) or passive (uninvolved) styles

The Expedition Online is a teamwork and planning activity supplied digitally, for use in virtual or face-to-face training sessions.

THE ACTIVITY

Their mission is to travel to a location deep in the desert to collect a vitally important letter (that could mean the difference between life and death). They have a map, a vehicle to travel in and a coded message that will reveal the location - but little else. What data do they need in order to plan the expedition? They must formulate eight carefully constructed questions in order to get that critical information.

Now they can start planning in earnest. They’ll see there are three possible routes – all need investigating. Who does what? Do they demonstrate attention to detail? Are they conscious of time?

They must also choose four people to go on the expedition itself. What attributes are they looking for? They can select members of their own team or candidates whose details are supplied in the Team Brief – or a mixture of both.

Their vehicle is subject to strict weight restrictions, 900 Kg max, so fuel, water, food, first aid, tools etc must be carefully chosen for each stage of the journey. Emergency supplies MUST be carried; other items are optional - but all have weight implications. Teams use Checklists to plan the packing of the vehicle and ascertain total weights. Get it badly wrong – and the expedition fails!

If all safety precautions are adhered to, of the three possible routes, only one is realistic. Will teams realise this or will they take unjustifiable risks to get back to base ahead of their competitors?

TRAINER'S ROLE

1. Briefly introduce the session, divide the group into teams and issues team briefs, a map of the Gozo Desert and a Data Request Form.
2. Teams have 15 minutes to brainstorm eight questions that will give them the data they need to plan the expedition. They note these on the Data Request Form.
3. After 15 minutes collect the Data Request Forms and hold them until the Debrief (for analysis/discussion).
4. Whatever data was requested, issue each team with a Critical Information Sheet. This gives teams all the information they need to plan their expedition.
5. Observe teams in action. Make notes on their teamwork, delegation, leadership, planning skills and time management.
6. After 90 minutes call a halt. After a break issue copies of the Team Review Sheet for teams to work through.
7. Ask each team EITHER to give brief feedback on how they worked together and what their final decision was, OR, if time allows, ask teams to prepare a more substantial presentation.
8. Lead a general debrief on the activity – there are lots of issues. Summarise the key lessons learned. Relate these to the workplace and how improvements might be made in real life.

The TEP has been designed to function as a self-administered learning instrument. The TEP yields an overall Team Effectiveness Score as well as separate scores for each of the 5 areas indicating the general health of the group and blockages that hinder team effectiveness.

Uses for the TEP

Appropriate for any type of team and all levels of team members and leaders, the TEP can be used as a stand-alone instrument or as a component in a larger team-building program. The TEP can be used to:

What's My Communication Style can be delivered as an online learning experience, in-person training event, or blended learning experience.

You can use the assessment as a standalone development tool, but it is best followed by the four-hour instructor-led course, in which participants reflect on their results through group discussion, application activities, and the development of an action plan for improving communication skills. We also provide facilitators with a one-page outline for a shorter “lunch-and-learn” style training session.

Understanding communication styles is essential for individuals at all organizational levels. It is often included in training classes for communication, leadership, team building, supervisory skills, and conflict resolution.

HOW IT WORKS

Participants start by identifying a preference for one of four communication styles using a research-based and validated learning assessment. A follow-up instructor-led workshop will teach participants how to "speed-read" the styles of colleagues and learn how to flex their personal style to improve communication.

This communication styles training assessment takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Individuals are presented with 24 statements and select the response that best represents the way they communicate. There are four response options to each statement, and each response measures one of the four personal communication styles: Direct, Spirited, Considerate, or Systematic. Learners are then presented with a profile detailing their dominant style and scores for each style.

At the heart of What’s My Communication Style is the HRDQ Style Model, based upon the research of William Moulton Marston, Carl Jung, and other behavioral science pioneers. The HRDQ Style Model goes beyond theory to offer a clear, relatable way to understand how people express themselves and interpret others. RollaBall! is so much more than a team building activity. This multi-faceted inter-team development exercise emphasizes the need for multiple departments to work together toward a common goal. This challenge is SO fun! Each team is challenged to create one-third of a runway that will carry a ping-pong ball from the starting point to the end of the line. Each section of the runway will look different and require a different set of resources.

At first, teams won't know whether they should compete or collaborate--most assume it's a competition. At the outset, they're asked a set of multiple choice questions, which get them started in assembling the resources they'll need to build a ball slide. Over time and through a series of coordinated meetings, teams find that all they need each other in order to succeed. The dynamics of the exercise make it an excellent negotiation game, but it can also be used for communication skills training, project planning, and more.

This activity is for face-to-face classroom use. Digital files are supplied via the Northgate Trainerhub. The Activity

Each team has to build one third of a runway to carry a ball from one end to the other. The three parts are:

• A tower and starting block plus the first section of the runway
• A longer piece of runway to include two curves
• An uphill section with a basket for the finish

Teams answer a set of multiple choice question to get the resources they need. Teams could share the answers with other teams but usually fail to do so. Nonetheless, each team will need to borrow resources from other groups or the complete structure will not be built. So why not share answers?

Once they have their resources, teams can begin building their runway parts - there is a meeting area where teams can discuss how the separate sections can fit together. The activity stresses the point that different departments need to work harmoniously together for success. What this means is sharing information readily and establishing good communications. Different parts of an organization are not rivals, they need to collaborate for success.

FACILITATING THE EQ GAME VIRTUAL EDITION

The game is facilitated in two parts. Part 1 builds the first two Emotional Intelligence skills and Part 2 helps develop the second two skills.

PART 1: SELF-AWARENESS & SELF-MANAGEMENT

Focusing on the first two pillars of emotional intelligence, PART 1 presents 20 typical situations that anyone might encounter at work. Each situation includes two slides:

• Slide 1: shows a scenario with two questions—

  • How are you feeling?
  • What will you do to manage your feelings?—plus sample responses.

• Slide 2: answers the questions - by offering additional answers for both questions, players can compare their answers to other typical responses. Reiterate that the answers shown on the slides are there as suggestions. There are never "right" feelings. The goal instead is to grow more familiar with noticing and labeling feelings.

PART 2: SOCIAL AWARENESS & RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Part 2 adds to Part 1 by asking participants to focus on the second two skills associated with Emotional Intelligence: Social Awareness and Relationship Management. Part 2 presents 20 typical work situations, with the goal of moving from identifying and managing feelings to taking action in ways that reflect social awareness and strengthen relationships.

FLOW OF THE GAME

1. Show the first slide and ask participants to put themselves in the scenario. Read the sample feelings and actions.
2. Then ask, “What else are you feeling?”, empahsizing that feelings are one-word emotions (e.g., angry, happy), not thoughts or interpretations.
3. After players list their feelings, ask: “How will you manage those feelings?” Read the example.
4. Then ask, “What else can you do?” Keep the focus on Self-Management, not problem-solving the situation itself.
5. Finally, have teams self-score the round, based on the scoring protocols below.

PLAY AS A GROUP OR IN BREAK-OUTS

LARGE GROUP - If you're playing as one big group, you'll present the Situations one at a time. You can either follow the game sequence or pick and choose your favorites.

BREAKOUTS - Alternatively, participants can work through a subset of Situations in small groups. Each of the four groups will get 5 situations in Part 1 and 4 situations in Part 2.

SCORING THE EQ GAME

• Each time a participant names a feeling or a self-management technique, they get 1 point.
• Each time a participant provides a social awareness action or relationship management technique, they get 1 point.
• Participants can win additional points by:
  • Giving an example of a situation they have experienced – 2 points
  • Giving an example of an empathetic statement – 2 points
• Participants keep track of their own points.

In this highly interactive session, participants will explore how to design, develop, and deliver training that is not only engaging, but also strategically aligned with business outcomes.
