Take time to notice and recognize individuals' efforts and accomplishments. Simple recognition pins offering a “high five,” “certified trainer,” or gold star can be both poignant and meaningful. Think playful tokens and office trophies don’t matter? Think again! Recognition has been shown to improve performance by 15%, according to a meta-analysis of 19 reinforcement theory studies (Stajkovic and Luthans, 1997). Another meta-analysis examined 72 reinforcement theory studies in organizational settings that found an average effect size of social recognition on the performance of 17% (Stajkovic and Luthans, 2003).
