promote appreciation and sharing
"Deb the Trainer" from Millbury, MA shared this inspiring idea, which has transformed how people in her organization interact:
"At a recent appreciation dinner we affixed a Token of Appreciation to each place card printed with a poem about passing on appreciation. By the end of dinner employees were passing coins to each other and continued to do so when they got back to work."
Deb, you've inspired us to create a poem that everyone can use when distributing Appreciation Tokens. Feel free to "steal" it as is or adapt it to your needs:
Too often in our circles, appreciation goes unspoken, So, let us start anew with this very special token. Please don't stash it in a wallet or leave it at your 'station,' "Pass it on" to a fellow friend, in an Act of Appreciation. As on and on it travels, giving thanks and recognition. Ours will become a place of brightened disposition.
Tokens measure 3/4" diameter. Sold in sets of 10.

TOY OF THE MONTH |
the ultimate stretchable fiddle!
Stretchy string is so much fun -- you can pull it, twirl it, squeeze it, tie it in knots.
Each string is 12" long but streeeeeeeetches out to 8 FEET in length! Feels great in your hands -- soft elastic and not sticky.
While Fiddle toys have been enriching our classrooms for over a decade, we can't assume that learners will know what to do with them, as the Brain Friendly Trainer recently found out. He told us, "a learner approached me after a whole day's training and said, 'I was waiting for the bit where we got to play with the toys. I saw everyone else fiddling with them and I thought they were going to get told off at any minute. When could I have started playing with them too?' From then on, I've made a note to myself to tell them it's okay to play right from the start!"

"Learning happens when our senses are stimulated. We quickly learn when we are young that if we drink something that is very hot, we will experience the feeling of pain and the lingering effect of a burned tongue.
"How did we learn this?" Spirito asks. "Someone may have warned us that a beverage was hot, . . . we may have felt the heat of the beverage through the cup that radiated onto our hands, and by the pain that the hot liquid left on our tongue."
Through this example, Spirito reinforces the reality that we gather information through all our senses. She says, "This simple example is applicable to any type of successful training or learning. By linking learning through engaging the senses, we are more likely to remember, retain, and use the information."
In her article, Linking Learning, Spirito advises us how to engage our learners by stimulating the senses, without causing sensory overload. Read on...
